HP buys green power for Texas data centre

US technology firm HP is buying 112MW of wind energy to power its data centre.

The agreement with renewable company SunEdison will help power 100% of its data centre operations in Texas using renewable energy.

It will avoid more than 340,000 tones of carbon emissions per year.

HP expects to reach its 2020 target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 20% by the end of this year.

The project is part of SunEdison's plan to start building a 300MW wind farm in the region.

Paul Gaynor, Executive Vice President, Americas and EMEA, SunEdison said: "HP’s commitment allows us to build this project which creates valuable local jobs and ensures Texan electricity customers get cost-effective energy."

The wind farm is expected to create more than 400 jobs during construction and 15 permanent positions once it starts operating.
