US scheme helps save $2.8m on energy costs

A US energy efficiency project has helped save around $2.8 million (£1.8m) and cut energy waste across 10 million square feet.

The Denver Housing Authority and the cities of Denver and Arvada, Colorado reduced waste in commercial buildings, public facilities and affordable housing.

This was achieved by installing solar panels, switching to energy efficient lighting and equipment upgrades.

It was part of the Department of Energy's (DOE) 'Better Buildings Challenge' initiative which aims to double American energy productivity by 2030.

Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz said:  “Better Buildings Challenge partners in Denver and Arvada are demonstrating reducing a building’s energy waste and greenhouse gas emissions helps to save money by saving energy while also protecting the environment."

More than 250 organisations have partnered with the DOE to achieve 20% portfolio-wide energy savings so far.
