Amazon plans Virginia’s largest solar project

Amazon has teamed up with a green energy development firm to build an 80MW solar farm in Virginia.

Amazon Solar Farm US East is expected to generate around 170,000MWh of electricity a year from October 2016 – the equivalent of powering 15,000 homes.

It is being developed as part of a joint venture with Community Energy and will is claimed to be the largest solar farm in the state.

All of the energy generated will be used to power both current and future Amazon Cloud data centres.

Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe said: “Amazon’s new solar project will create good jobs on the Eastern Shore and generate more clean, renewable energy to fuel the new Virginia economy.”

In November 2014, Amazon said it wanted to commit to 100% renewable energy usage for the company’s global infrastructure footprint.

In April it announced around 25% of the power consumed by its global infrastructure comes from renewable energy sources.
