University of Edinburgh cuts ties with fossil fuels

The University of Edinburgh is cutting links with coal and tar sands investment within the next six months.

This decision has been taken by the University’s Investment Committee which agreed changes to its fossil fuel investment policy.

The institution invested in three fossil fuel companies and it is urging them to reduce their carbon emissions by identifying and operating in areas with alternative sources of energy.

Charlie Jeffery, University’s Senior Vice-Principal said: “This decision underlines the recent commitment made by the University to address the challenge of climate change though its responsible investment policy.

"We will act quickly to reduce harmful emissions through divestment, reinforcing the work we do to act on climate change through research and teaching.”

Edinburgh University joins Oxford University which confirmed last week confirmed it will no invest in coal and tar sand companies.
