Renewable energy lights up Spanish streets

Renewable energy lights up Spanish streets

Street lights in Barcelona are being powered by solar and wind energy.

Spanish company Eolgreen designed the new technology which it claims can generate 900 watts per day in good solar and wind conditions and emits zero carbon emissions.

Each streetlight has two solar panels and a turbine which moves when the wind blows and generates electricity. This energy is saved in a battery which can last for 58 hours.

The  innovation follows a four-year research and development period and cost a total of €970,000 (£1,3m).
