Cranfield University

The School of Water, Energy and Environment (SWEE) leads in delivering Cranfield’s mission for the themes of Energy, Water Technology and the Environment. Within the SWEE, the Energy Theme has over 200 academics and researchers engaged in research and teaching in energy. Close engagement with the energy sector over the last 20 years has produced long-standing strategic partnerships with Alstom Power, BP, Centrica, Chevron, Doosan Babcock, Dong Energy, Petrofac, Rolls Royce, Saudi Aramco, Shell and Siemens among many others.

SWEE's Energy theme institutional strength includes low carbon energy supply and power generation.

Energy decarbonisation has traditionally focused on making green electricity, less on providing green heat.  In reality, society consumes much more energy through heating than electricity.

Cranfield is collaborating in a project, led by Rotaheat and part funded by Innovate UK, to scale up demonstrated technology to deliver inexpensive clean thermal energy, displacing carbon emissions.  The project's innovative approach directly converts motive power sources direct to thermal energy in the form of heated fluids.  Currently the technology delivers heat at in excess of 100C, with a roadmap to deliver heat at over 300C and scale to 1MW.

The project will support Rotaheat gain market share in the supply of clean heat to sectors including agriculture, automotive and industrial and for applications such as space heating and water treatment.
