Latest energy stats show renewables up by almost a fifth

Renewable energy in the UK is up by almost a fifth from last year.

The latest energy stats released by DECC, found renewables share of electricity generation rose to 17.8% which is a 4.2% increase on its share from last year. Wind generation was also up at 4%.

The stats highlight the three-month period from October 2014 to December 2014, compared to the same period a year earlier.

Coal provided 34.7% of electricity generation with nuclear at 16.9% and gas at 29.9% of the share.

The closure of nuclear power plants is thought to be the reason of lower coal generation, however coal share remains above gas, the report claims.

The report found overall primary energy consumption in the UK fell by 4.7% on a temperature adjusted basis.
