Apple invests €1.7bn in green EU data centres

Apple has announced plans to build and operate two data centres in Europe powered entirely by renewable energy.

It will invest €1.7 billion (£1.2bn) in the facilities located in County Galway, Ireland and Denmark’s central Jutland.

The data centres will power Apple’s online services including the iTunes Store, the App Store, iMessage, Maps and Siri for customers across Europe, where it directly employs more than 18,000 people across 19 countries.

Lisa Jackson, Apple’s Vice President of Environmental Initiatives said: “We believe innovation is about leaving the world better than we found it and the time for tackling climate change is now.

“We’re excited to spur green industry growth in Ireland and Denmark and develop energy systems that take advantage of their strong wind resources.”

The date centres are expected to begin operations in 2017.
