Turbines get the stamp – Made in Britain

The majority of large tidal lagoon turbines will be made in Britain.

That’s after General Electric (GE) and Andritz Hydro secured a £300 million contract to supply sixteen “bidirectional” turbines to the “world’s first” tidal lagoon power plant in Wales.

The two companies who are the preferred bidders to the £1 billion Swansea Tidal Lagoon infrastructure project said they will use UK manufacturing parts as part of a new agreement.

A new Turbine Assembly Plant in Wales will employ more than 100 workers that will help to assemble all the turbines at the facility, said both companies.

Welsh Secretary Stephen Crabb said: “Today’s announcement by these two global businesses is a massive vote of confidence in our highly skilled workforce.

“This project, if planning consent is granted, has the potential to transform the South Wales economy by creating hundreds of jobs and countless supply chain opportunities for local businesses across the region.”
