No love for fossil fuel this Valentine’s

Thousands of protesters from across the UK and around the world are planning to protest against the fossil fuel industry this weekend.

The protest will take place from 13 to 14 February and is part of the Fossil Free campaign's Global Divestment Day.

Worldwide actions will include individuals closing their bank accounts with banks who invest in the industry and rallies and sit-ins by university students.

Protests are planned in major cities in the UK including London, Bristol, Oxford and Edinburgh.

The campaign wants business leaders to “immediately freeze” any new investments in fossil fuel companies.

According to the campaign, hundreds of events have been planned for Global Investment Day in 48 countries spanning six continents.

Danielle Paffard, UK divestment campaigner at 350 org said: “The UK divestment movement is already making a huge impact. And in just two years, this campaign has grown from a few universities to hundreds of institutions around the world.

“Together, we’ve succeeded in challenging the fossil fuels industry, and begun to chip away at their political power. Across the UK Global Divestment Day is celebrating this success, and helping to launch a new chapter of this growing movement.”
