Obama Administration ends clean coal project

A clean coal project has been shut down after the US Department of Energy (DOE) suspended the majority of its funding.

According to reports, the DOE will not provide a further $1 billion (£657m) in funding it had committed to the project because it would not be able to use the funds by the September 2015 deadline.

The FutureGen project is a coal-fired electrical generating power plant near Meredosia, western Illinois.

The project aimed to refit the shuttered coal-fired power plant with oxygen fuel combusting generators. It would have captured most of its carbon dioxide and stored it underground.

The FutureGen Alliance, the companies working on the project, said they were disappointed by the news and had no other way to make up the money.
