Hospitals jockey for NHS Sustainability awards

Hospitals in the National Health Service are invited to enter an awards scheme recognising the best projects for saving energy and cutting waste.

Free to enter, the NHS Sustainability Awards are backed by Barts Health Trust and the Sustainable Development Unit.

There’s less than a month until the deadline, 5 February 2015, with winners announced at a ceremony in London on 26 March 2015.

Categories cover areas such as IT, human resources, procurement, energy, water and waste, plus behavioural change.

The panel of nine judges includes Kim Ormsby, the national head of CSR & Sustainability for NHS Property Services and Julian Amey, Chief Executive of the Institute of Healthcare Engineering and Estate Management.

Scott Buckler, Campaign Manager for the awards told ELN: “As we move towards a preventative healthcare system we must ensure our NHS is addressing the role they play in the community, so the judges will have an eye out for the impact applicants have had on their regional communities.”

He added: “We have to move away from seeing energy as a separate area to healthcare and see that through better energy management within domestic housing for instance then we may see less illness.”
