Ukraine cuts power to Crimea

Ukraine cut off the power to Crimea last week, its former peninsula which was absorbed by Russia in March 2014.

Ukrainian power company DTEK halted power transmission on Friday 26 December after an order from regulator Ukrenergo, reported the Kyiv Post.

In a statement DTEK said the line it disabled is “currently the only line that feeds the Crimea”.

The Crimean branch of DTEK, Krymenergo, picked up the slack and said it was “doing everything possible to reduce the time without electricity” for homes in Crimea in a statement on 27 December.

Valery Foksha, head of operational management at Krymenergo said the staff had “managed to avoid disruption of the pumping stations, sewage treatment plants, boiler rooms and other critical infrastructure,” added the statement.
