Call to clear up green building certificates

Call to clear up green building certificates

Austrian researchers say there is "room for improvement" in the consistency of certificates recognising buildings as "green" and sustainable.

After surveying international green building councils, they found there is “range” in quality of certification systems.

They praised the international green credentials of buildings such as the Bank of America Tower in New York and the IZD Tower in Vienna.

But with builders able to get a number of different certificates, there is a “lack of transparency”, suggested Dr Sabine Sedlacek, project coordinator at the MODUL University Vienna in Austria.

She said this is an “impediment” to developing and funding green construction projects, adding: “After all, verifiable sustainability is considered a mark of quality and ensures... an increase in the market value of real estate."
