NI officially opens 42MW wind farm

A wind farm that will meet the power needs of nearly 24,000 homes every year has officially been opened in Northern Ireland.

The £58 million Dunbeg project has a total capacity of 42MW and is located between Limavady and Coleraine.

To date, it has created more than 40 jobs during the development and construction phases, according to developer Gaelectric Group.

Northern Ireland Finance Minister Simon Hamilton said: “As well as helping to reduce our carbon emissions, wind farms such as this create jobs and generate investment.

"I am also encouraged that in excess of £3 million will be invested in local community funds as a result of this and other Gaelectric projects.”

The company aims to build and commission 164MW worth of wind energy projects by 2017.
