All the turbines installed at the £1.6 billion West of Duddon Sands offshore wind farm are now generating electricity.
The 389MW project, jointly developed by Iberdrola’s ScottishPower unit and Denmark’s DONG Energy, reached full power output two months ahead of schedule, the companies said.
Energy Secretary Ed Davey officially opened the wind farm - located around 20 kilometres off the Barrow-in-Furness coastline in North West England - which will generate enough electricity to power 280,000 homes.
He said: “We want an energy mix that is built on diverse, home grown sources to make sure our supplies are clean and secure. Wind has a huge role to play, which is why the UK is the best place in the world to invest in offshore wind projects.”
Up to 1,000 people were employed for the project.
Earlier this year, Blue Transmission was picked as the owner and operator of the transmission links to the offshore wind farm.
