Windy Kentish Flats work gears up

Engineers are gearing up to put 15 extra wind turbines at the Kentish Flats offshore wind farm.

Next week Vattenfall will begin the first wave of work on a £165 million extension to the farm.

Starting on 22 October, the seabed will be prepared for 30 kilometres of electricity cables which will link the new turbines to the shore.

Matthew Green, Vattenfall’s Project Director for the construction of Kentish Flats Extension said: “Building an offshore wind farm is no easy task; that is why it is one of the most exciting engineering challenges around today.”

All of the 139.6-metre-high wind turbines are set to be in place by July 2015.

Generating 49.5MW worth of power, the energy company said these could meet the annual electricity needs of 35,000 households.
