Ed Miliband said a future Labour government would secure the UK’s position as a “world leader” in green industries by 2025.
In his last conference address before next year’s general election, the Labour Party leader pledged to create a million green jobs as he warned the UK is falling behind other nations as a market for clean technology.
He said: “Under this government, Britain lags behind Germany, Japan, the United States and even India and China for low carbon, green technologies and services.
“So many of our brilliant businesses are desperate to play their part in creating their jobs of the future but they just can’t do it unless government does its bit. With our plan, we will.”
That’s one of six national goals announced by Mr Miliband yesterday for the next 10 years.
While there was no mention of the energy price freeze, he addressed the price rise issue, saying: “There is going to be upward pressure on energy prices over time but that makes it all the more important we get the best deal for customers. So let’s break the dominance of the big energy companies, let’s call a rigged market what it is and let’s get a fairer deal for the people of Britain.”
Mr Miliband also insisted the environment “matters” and called for more action to combat climate change.
