Essex waste facility to be powered by solar

A new waste management facility in Basildon, Essex, is to be partly powered by a solar system.

Photon Energy completed installing the 309.71KW array, which includes 1,230 solar panels, on the roof of the mechanical and biological treatment (MBT) facility.

The new PV system is expected to generate around 10% of the energy required by the MBT facility - being built by Balfour Beatty - as well as the visitor and education centre.

The MBT is expected to process around 417,000 tonnes of municipal waste every year.

The project is a partnership between Essex County Council, the county’s 12 district and borough councils and the Southend-on-Sea Borough Council.
