Wiltshire Council hopes for solar energy savings of £1.5m

Wiltshire Council has installed what it claims to be the UK’s largest local authority owned solar system at its energy recovery facility in Westbury.

More than 1,240 solar panels - installed by Solarsense - which cover an area equivalent to around seven tennis courts, are expected to generate 280,500kWh of electricity every year.

They will help power the Council’s Northacre Resource Recovery Centre (RCC), which turns household waste into energy.

Wiltshire Council hopes the solar project will save more than £55,000 on energy costs every year, with the benefits expected to exceed £1.5 million over 20 years.

Toby Sturgis, Cabinet Member for waste said: “As a council we are committed to finding sustainable solutions to our energy requirements as well as cutting costs where possible so more can be spent on frontline services.

“This is an ideal opportunity to use renewable energy to power a site which uses innovative technology and I’m delighted that we are leading the way in doing this.”
