Staycation ahoy! Supermarkets drop petrol prices

Staycation ahoy! Supermarkets drop petrol prices

The supermarkets Tesco, Asda and Sainsbury’s engaged in a price-cutting battle today, all chopping 2p off the price of their petrol and diesel.

Drivers at any of Asda’s 234 forecourts will pay no more than 126.7 pence per litre (ppl) for unleaded and 129.7 ppl for diesel.

Asda said this is the first time diesel prices have fallen below the 130p mark since January 2011. It pointed to the “strengthening pound against the dollar” as the key driver behind the cuts.

The news comes days after Tesco published research suggesting high fuel prices are preventing Brits from enjoying holidays and trips in the UK.

In the poll 85% said they would travel around the country more if fuel prices were cheaper and more than a third (39%) claimed they have cut down on family day trips.
