Around 1.5 million people switched energy suppliers in the first six months of this year, according to the industry’s trade body.
Roughly 600,000 of those were switches to small suppliers, Energy UK revealed today.
There has been a “steady long term increase” in the number of people moving to small suppliers, with 112,348 last month compared to just 36,876 in June 2013.
Angela Knight, Chief executive of Energy UK said: “It is good to see customers are continuing to take advantage of the choices available to them… There is a lot of choice out there and customers can save money by switching so it’s heartening to see that consumers are grabbing these opportunities.”
Ofgem last month approved new plans that will allow consumers to switch energy suppliers within three days compared to the five weeks it currently takes. The changes are due to kick in at the end of this year.
