Firms scoop £160m Sellafield nuclear clean-up job

A joint venture between infrastructure group Balfour Beatty and Cavendish Nuclear has been given the go-ahead to build a £160 million nuclear decommissioning support facility at Sellafield.

They will construct a 0.5 hectares, 25 metre-high facility that will support two existing waste silos, i.e. underground vertical cylindrical structure for storage, in retrieving historic waste and reducing hazard.

It is the third phase of the project and follows the £5.5 million preliminary design phase and £12.5 million detailed design and enabling work stage.

More than 300 jobs are expected to be created during the construction period at the Cumbrian site.

Steve Marshall, Balfour Beatty Executive Chairman said: “The UK infrastructure market includes significant opportunities for nuclear decommissioning and clean-up activities. Similarly, new nuclear build and the construction of new power generation projects will bring us an opportunity to deploy our extensive experience.”

Work is scheduled to be completed in autumn 2017.
