Go-ahead for 67-turbine wind farm in the Highlands

The Scottish Government has given the go-ahead for a new 67-tubrine wind farm near Fort Augustus in the Highlands.

The Stronelairg project will have a total capacity of 242MW, producing enough electricity to power around 114,000 homes and will also create more than 100 jobs.

It will be built by SSE Renewables and is expected to generate up to £15 of benefits to the local community over 25-years and an additional £15 million will go to the Highland-wide Sustainable Development Fund.

Scottish Energy Minister Fergus Ewing said: “Wind farms, like Stronelairg, play an important part in helping Scotland reach its target of the equivalent of 100% of electricity demand generated from renewables.

An application for a 21-turbine Newfield wind farm near Lockerbie in Dumfries and Galloway has however been rejected on the grounds of “unacceptable adverse visual, landscape and cumulative impacts”.
