Spuddy-good news for wind powered potatoes

It’s spuds away for a new wind turbine to power one of the UK’s largest potato suppliers.

Along with the green lending arm of Triodos Bank, potato business Greenvale has bought a turbine for its packing plant in Cambridgeshire.

With a 1.5 megawatt (MW) capacity, it should generate up to 60% of the electricity needed to power the potato packing site.

Building work is meant to have begun on the 110 metre turbine which should be ready by the end of 2014.

Trevor Dear, Operations Director of Greenvale said: "The wind turbine will secure a reliable energy supply for our packing site, generate jobs within the region, and reduce our impact on the environment.

“This is a key part of our environmental policy which aims to reduce our CO2 output by 20% by 2015."
