British Gas orders 100 electric vans for fleet

Energy firm British Gas has ordered 100 “green” vans for its fleet after a successful six-month trial of 28 vans last winter.

A first order for 50 electric Nissan vans, the e-NV200 model which runs on a lithium-ion battery, will be followed by another 50 to be delivered by December 2014.

British Gas has committed to make 10% of its 13,000-strong home service fleet electric by 2017.

The company says some drivers in the trial were reluctant to hand back their vans.

Colin Marriott, Fleet General Manager at British Gas said: “The feedback from our engineers speaks for itself, with the majority saying they would be happy to keep the van permanently.”

Hitachi Capital will be funding the purchase of the Nissan e-NV200s by British Gas as well as managing the all-electric fleet.
