Big battery to store wind power at Irish power plant

An energy storage array is to act like a giant battery for wind turbines in Northern Ireland.

The American-run company behind the 100MW energy store has put forward plans to get a grid connection for wind turbines off the coast from the Kilroot coal plant in Belfast.

The storage array could be ready as early as the second quarter of 2015 if a deal between the power plant owner and energy storage firm is in place by then.

Mark Miller, Vice President of AES United Kingdom and Ireland Markets said: “We have submitted a connection application to SONI to secure transmission grid connection at Kilroot and are continuing to explore potential commercial arrangements.”
