N Ireland to scrap planning rules for heat pumps

Householders in Northern Ireland will no longer need planning permission for a renewable type of heat pump in their homes, Northern Ireland’s Environment Minister announced yesterday.

Mark H Durkan said the change would help people trying to save money on their energy bills.

From 10 March planning permission for installing, altering or replacing air source heat pumps – which absorb heat from the outside air - in homes will be scrapped.

Mr Durkan said: “This really is a win-win, a boost for the environment whilst removing red tape to help households enjoy the benefits of renewable energy and cheaper heating bills.”

The minister said ditching another piece of “red tape” would speed up planning decisions.
