US awards $9m to improve water quality

The US Government has awarded grants worth $9 million (£5.5m) in total for innovative and sustainable ways to improve water quality.

Four research organisations have won a share of the fund to improve existing water infrastructure, including looking into problems of ageing wastewater collection and treatment systems.

Gina McCarthy, US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator said: “These grants will go towards research to help us better manage nutrients and better protect our precious water resources from the dangers of nutrient pollution, especially in a changing climate.”

According to the EPA, nutrient pollution is one of America’s most widespread, costly and challenging environmental problems and is caused by excess chemical elements such as nitrogen and phosphorus in waterways.
