Thomson owner beats carbon target for holiday flights

Holiday group TUI Travel said it has beaten its most “stretching” target to cut carbon emissions and saved more than one million pounds with energy and water efficiency over 2013.

The group which has more than 30 million customers and owns travel firm Thompson said it cut the relative carbon emissions across all six of its airlines by 9.3% in five years.

This beats the target set by its Sustainable Holidays Plan, a 9% cut by 2015 on a 2008 baseline.

The average CO2 emitted for each "revenue passenger kilometre" - a measure of traffic for an airline - now stands at 70.7grams, an improvement of 3.2% since 2012. TUI said this places it as one of the most carbon efficient airlines in Europe.

The firm also said its UK and Ireland business saved nearly €2 million (£1.6m) with a water and energy saving scheme at 40 hotels on 2013. The scheme led to average cost savings of 6% for energy and 13% for water.

Jane Ashton, Group Director of Sustainable Development said: "TUI Travel's aim is to support sustainability change at scale, both across our own operations and the wider industry… we saw a major shift in the number of our hotel suppliers who have now achieved credible and independently-audited sustainability certification.”

In the 2013 atmosfair Airline Index, TUIfly was named the most climate efficient airline worldwide with more than a million passengers and the most climate efficient charter airline. Thomson Airways was ranked as the second most climate efficient for short haul flights.
