Shopping centres save £1m with LED lights

Shopping centres save £1m with LED lights

A group of car parks and shopping centres has dramatically slashed their energy use to make savings of £1 million over 2013.

The giant roll-out of energy saving lights involved installing nearly 57,000 LED (light emitting diode) light bulbs.

Improving the lights at 13 shopping centres around the UK - such as Eldon Square in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne (pictured) and the Victoria Centre in Nottingham - is costing the owners intu £6 million.

The on-going upgrades - installed by intu's project partner, Admiral Power & Lighting - are part of an ambitious 30% three year energy reduction target.

Brian Boundy, Managing Director of intu Retail Services said: "This project ticks all of the corporate, economic and environmental boxes."

Other centres included were the Trafford Centre in Manchester, Broadmarsh in Nottingham, centres in Watford, Bromley, Uxbridge, Thurrock, Gateshead, Glasgow, Norwich, Stoke-On-Trent and Milton Keynes.

Along with intu's three other jointly owned centres, in total they get 340 million customers a year.
