Outages after Canadian ice storm

Brits aren’t the only ones who suffered from power outages over the holiday season.

An ice storm before Christmas near Canada’s financial capital Toronto led to blackouts for 300,000 people at the height of the bad weather.

Last night nearly 3,000 people were still without power in the area, said power firm Toronto Hydro.

Power equipment received “severe damage” during the ice storm, meaning repairs are taking “much longer” than would normally be the case, added the firm.

Officials at the firm said clean-up operations could cost up to $10 million (£5.7m).
