Siemens gets 'record' wind order from Warren Buffett

US billionaire Warren Buffett's subsidiary firm has placed a wind turbine order claimed to be worth more than $1 billion (£0.6bn) with Siemens.

The engineering and electronics giant will supply MidAmerican Energy Company, a subsidiary of Mr Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway investment company, with 448 turbines for five different projects in Iowa.

With a total capacity of 1,050MW – enough to power around 317,000 homes - Siemens claims it is the largest single order for onshore wind awarded globally to date.

Bill Fehrman, President and CEO of MidAmerican Energy said the two companies will have provided more than 2.2GW of clean, wind-generated electricity in Iowa since 2008 once the new projects are completed in 2015.

Last month reports claimed Mr Buffett's firm also bought a stake in oil and gas giant ExxonMobil.
