‘Look at carbon footprint of Russian products for Sochi’s green legacy’

‘Look at carbon footprint of Russian products for Sochi’s green legacy’

The Carbon Trust is calling on Russia to look at the lifetime carbon emissions of its exports to win a lasting 'green' legacy for the Sochi Winter Olympics in 2014.

The recommendation comes in a report published by the trust and commissioned by a development branch of the UN.

With many companies trying to go green, the report advises low 'embodied emissions' are now becoming a selling point for products and services.

It gives the example of EU steel, which can boast a footprint of around 1.3 tonnes of CO2 per tonne, compared to 1.7 tonnes for Russian steel.

The report says the Government should work with Russian companies to pilot ways of accurately measuring the carbon footprints of their products in line with internationally recognised standards, before rolling out a full scheme based on the trial.
