Brit firm wins contract for solar panels on South African mall

Solarcentury Africa has won a contract to install a 574 kW solar panel system on the roof of the Waterfall Mall (pictured) in South Africa.

It will be the largest rooftop installation for the firm in the country since it was formed as a joint venture between the UK's Solarcentury and local company Momentous Energy.

The mall is one of 43 retail properties in South Africa owned by Growthpoint, which has plans for to roll out more solar installations in the future.

Gareth Warner, Managing Director of Solarcentury Africa said: “The Waterfall Mall roof installation will be capable of generating enough energy to power the equivalent of 750 average-sized homes and offset 928 tonnes of carbon dioxide. It will also significantly cut Growthpoint's electricity cost which is critical at a time of rocketing fossil fuel prices in South Africa.”
