Tesla brings ‘free electric highway’ to the EU

Drivers who own Tesla’s electric car can now charge their vehicles for free when travelling between cities in Norway.

Dubbed the ‘Supercharger’, it will help consumers that drive the Model S EV (pictured) charge their cars 20 times faster than most common charging stations, providing half a charge in around 20 minutes, the carmaker claims.

It unveiled its European Supercharger network in Norway today, which allows Model S owners to travel free of cost along highways throughout the country. The routes include include Trondheim to the capital Oslo, Oslo to Kristiansand, Kristiansand to Stavanger and Oslo to Gol with minimal stops.

Tesla claims around 90% of the Norwegian population lives within 320km of the charging station and around 60% of the nation’s total land mass is within the same distance of the Supercharger.

The firm already has a similar network in North America, where it plans to have most metropolitan areas covered with its charging points within six months.

Earlier this year ELN reported Tesla Motors is talking to Google about adapting its electric car models with driverless technology.
