360 litres of radioactive water leak at Japan’s nuclear plant

360 litres of radioactive water leak at Japan’s nuclear plant

Around 360 litres of radioactive water was found leaking at the Fukushima nuclear plant (pictured) in Japan.

Owner Tokyo Electric Power Co (TEPCO) said it had suspended operations at the desalination unit earlier today after the leak was detected. The affected unit removes salt from contaminated seawater used to cool reactors after radioactive materials have been filtered out.

The water is believed to have leaked from the unit before it went through its salt removal system and TEPCO said it continues to identify the cause of the leakage.

The new leak is the latest in a series of problems faced by the nuclear power plant, including previous leaks and power outage.

The facility suffered a reactor meltdown and released radiation following an earthquake – the most powerful recorded earthquake to ever hit Japan – which struck off the coast of the country in March 2011.
