Bolton Wanderers will now be sponsored by an energy firm after fans protested against the football club entering into a sponsorship with pay-day loan company QuickQuid.
The club said its deal with Bolton-based FibrLec comes after taking on board feedback from its fan base and discussions with local and national politicians.
A petition against the club's two-year sponsorship agreement with QuickQuid is believed to have received almost 4,500 signatures. In a statement, the club said although it had anticipated some negative responses, it “underestimated the adverse reaction to the sector of business in which the sponsor operated”.
Bolton Councillor Cliff Morris said he is pleased with the club's decision to reconsider their recent sponsorship proposal.
He added: “We have been in discussion with the club since last week’s announcement to raise our concerns and those of the community. Their response clearly shows the value the club places on the support of their fans and the wider Bolton family.”
FibrLec, a sustainable energy firm that specialises in commercialising the University of Bolton's smart materials, will have its logo along with the university's logo on the club's new match kit and training wear for the next two years.
Earlier this week ELN reported Brazil has opened its football stadium powered by solar energy in preparation for the World Cup next year.
