Power goes out in Knightsbridge and Victoria

Thousands of homes and businesses in London were hit by a power cut today which has been linked with the sight of "smoke" at a nearby substation.

Around 25,000 customers' electricity supplies were initially interrupted at 1:13pm in Victoria and Knightsbridge (pictured). UK Power Networks said it restored power for the majority of them at 1:27pm and 2:16pm. Victoria and Knightsbridge tube stations too were without power in the afternoon, with passengers having to mill around outside the stations (pictured).

More than 5,000 customers, however, still have no access to electricity.

A spokesperson from UK Power Networks said: “Urgent work is continuing to reconnect supplies to the remaining 5,774 customers and all our resources are focused on this. We are assessing the damage following smoke discovered at a substation in the area. We apologise for the disruption and our engineers are working as quickly and as safely as possible to restore the final supplies.”
