Libya aims for 20% renewable energy by 2020

Libya plans to generate a fifth of its power from renewable sources by the end of the decade, according to reports.

The nation currently relies almost entirely on its oil and gas reserves for its energy needs.

At a conference on sustainable energy in Brussels, the country’s Electricity Minister Dr Ali Mohammed Muhairiq said: "In 20 to 30 years Libya may run out of oil, therefore we plan to replace it with renewables.”

Reports claim the Government is also close to issuing tenders for two solar projects in the country.

The news follows other African nations that have also planned to produce energy from renewable sources, including Algeria which has a target of 40% by 2030.
