Brazilian slums get eco-favelas

Brazilian slum communities in the capital Rio de Janeiro have been given sixteen eco-friendly apartments.

The city opened the new homes built with sustainable or recycled materials in the favelas of Babilônia and Chapéu Mangueira in the south of Rio earlier this year. Other improvements in the neighbourhood include LED lighting, waste collection and solar panels.

The apartments are part of a $52.4 million investment announced by the city’s Municipal Housing Secretariat will see a total of 117 ‘green’ units go up in the two communities by 2014.

Perched on steep hillsides, roughly seven thousand people live in these two favelas which sprouted a century ago and sources suggest at least a fifth of houses are still unconnected to sewage and water supply systems.
