India seeks global firms for waste-to-energy projects

International firms are being invited to submit proposals for waste-to-energy plants to treat the refuse in the state of Mumbai.

With more than 6,000 metric tonnes of solid waste generated by the city everyday, the two operational dumping grounds in Deonar and Kanjurmarg are believed to be getting worse, according to reports.

They claim the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is looking for solutions from companies across the globe, which offer sustainable technologies to treat waste and generate energy from it.

The BMC is believed to initially have plans for three plants with a capacity of 1,000 metric tonnes each. However, the reports also claim officials are worried that there could be problems operating the plants during the monsoon season as wet waste is not generally preferred for waste-to-energy generation.
