London will host Formula E electric Grand Prix

The UK will host one of the first ever electric Grand Prix-style races in London when the Formula E Championship kicks off next year.

Eight cities so far have been selected to hold races in 2014, including Rome in Italy, China’s capital Beijing and the South American party centres Rio De Janeiro in Brazil and Argentina’s Buenos Aires.

Each coast of the United States will also get to see the ‘E-Prix’, with Hollywood hotspot Los Angeles and the east coast’s Miami staging races. Another two host cities are yet to be announced.

Last November the race’s promoter Formula E Holdings announced it had bought 42 electric Formula cars, the Formulec (pictured), which will be used in the inaugural race in 2014 unless the 10 racing teams develop their own vehicles.

Speaking at the time, chief executive Alejandro Agag said Formula E “wants to show that electric cars are fast, reliable and safe. Our mission is to establish electric cars as a real option for people’s daily lives, one that will make our cities cleaner and more liveable.”
