Energy apprentices: you’re hired!

Energy apprentices: you’re hired!

Business energy provider Opus Energy is offering ten apprenticeships where young workers will get the chance to earn a NVQ qualification.

The news coincides with National Apprenticeship Week which kicked off yesterday. Prime Minister David Cameron has been outspoken in his call for more firms to take on apprentices while a current government scheme encourages firms to take on young workers in these roles by paying some of their wages.

Working with Northampton College, the firm says it wants to identify “local, talented individuals looking to work in the energy sector”. It follows a previous successful scheme Opus Energy ran last year.

Five of the apprentices will start work with Opus next week in the company’s customer services department, while the next handful will begin in September. Opus believes other companies can benefit from giving more young workers such opportunities.

Charlie Crossley Cooke, Managing Director of the firm said: “The enthusiasm that the apprentices have delivered over the last year has been outstanding. Their dedicated mentors have got almost as much out of the scheme as the apprentices have done themselves. We encourage other companies to get involved and set up their own apprenticeship schemes.”
