Ice rink centre freezes out £120k energy cost

A Scottish leisure centre popular for its large ice rink and water slides froze out more than £130,000 from its energy bills by bailing out of the consortium it was in, it has now been revealed.

Keeping an ice rink cool demands a huge amount of power – even in chilly Scotland – which can mean frosty energy bills for operators.

The Time Capsule in Lanarkshire ditched group buying in 2008 when it found it could save thousands by bagging energy prices in the market - rather than the consortium’s deals negotiated well in advance.

Craig Hamilton, Maintenance and Safety Manager at the leisure centre said: “Energy price hikes became a great concern for the Time Capsule. After 10 years buying within a consortium it became evident that bulk purchasing no longer offered best value.”

He said things changed when they put in place a new strategy designed by consultancy STC Energy.

“STC were able to offer us a new procurement strategy which attracted more suppliers with keener site specific prices. The result was a much more efficient service with amazing savings.”
