NYC Mayor wants 10,000 electric car charging points

The Big Apple is about to get a lot greener if its Mayor gets his way - Michael Bloomberg wants 10,000 new electric car charging spots installed around the city. If a pilot project goes to plan, New York City could get these extra charging spots over the next seven years.

During a State of the City speech, Mr Bloomberg is reported as stating: "This year we’ll pilot curbside vehicle chargers that will allow drivers to fill up their battery in as little as 30 minutes. We’ll work with the City Council to amend the Building Code so that up to 20% of all new public parking spaces will be wired and ready for electric vehicles.”

According to US charging firm ChargePoint, New York is a leader in electric car adoption rates, with 2,598 registered vehicles as of January 2013, up 76% from just three months ago, while the non-profit group Green Parking Council says last year more than 50,000 new electric cars were sold in the USA.

The New York plan comes as on the opposite coast of the United States, California is apparently considering laws allowing slower electric cars onto motorways.

In contrast last week London Mayor Boris Johnson was criticised for "half-hearted" plans to get people using electric vehicles (EVs), with confusion over how much cash was available to build a charging network and how many EVs we should aim to get on the capital's roads.
