Volkswagen factory saves 85% energy with all-electric machine

A Volkswagen factory in Germany has saved up to 85% of energy on one of its plastic-making processes by switching from hydraulic machines to fully electric models.

Designed by manufacturer Sumitomo, the new injection moulding machine at the Braunschweig car parts plant makes lighting dial trims for the Golf VII car (pictured).

Marco Heinemann at the Braunschweig plant said: "In our production processes along the value creation chain, energy efficiency is playing an increasingly important role.”

The German car brand has targets for getting all its factories on a sustainable footing. By 2018, all Volkswagen plants are meant to have cut their energy and water use as well as waste and emissions by 25%.
