New roadmap to help double renewable energy by 2030

New roadmap to help double renewable energy by 2030

The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) has launched a new global roadmap in a bid to help double the share of renewable energy by 2030.

The ‘REMAP 2030’ process was presented at a two-day assembly in Abu Dhabi earlier this week, which brought together energy experts and policy makers from around the world. It aims to help the UN Secretary General’s ‘Sustainable Energy for All’ initiative hit the target of doubling the share of renewables in the global energy mix to 30% by 2030.

IRENA believes it is possible to attain the goal but said “international efforts need to accelerate substantially”, with investment in renewable power generation, grid expansions, sustainable biomass and the use of renewable energy to generate heat. IRENA claims global renewable power generation will have to exceed annual rates of more than 150GW per year, compared to around 110GW in 2011.

Adnan Amin, IRENA Director General said: “REMAP 2030 clearly maps the challenge we face in meeting international targets to double the share of renewable energy worldwide. The good news is that costs are falling, the technology is spreading and countries across the world are implementing policies to make this happen. With the right political will, a world powered by clean, renewable energy is within our reach.”

IRENA also launched its ‘Global Renewable Energy Atlas’ at the assembly, which is believed to be the world’s first open-access global Atlas of renewable energy sources. It is designed to raise awareness of the world’s renewable energy potential and help businesses looking to invest in new markets.

IRENA is mandated by 159 countries and the European Union to promote the sustainable use of all forms of renewable energy.
