Editorial – Energy your unappreciated Xmas present…

So it's time to carve up, unwrap, flop out and in some cases, pass out!

Xmas Day is here and so is the end of all that build up and in some cases months of planning. The family arguments, the trekking across the country and the desperate rush for presents. If you are actually reading this then you too are typifying modern Christmas, because many of us are logging on.

Today we will have a low energy demand from industry and business but the demand from our smart phones, tablets, computers and smart tvs will continue. Many of us spend the modern Xmas day logging on for work or shopping and perhaps it's not that bad a thing to do.

It is only in relatively modern history that we have stopped working on Dec 25th. Go back a century and everyone was at it, working I mean, except the wealthy. There was no day off for the scullery maid or coal man or railway worker or telegram boy.  And right now it's the same in the vast majority of the world.

December the 25th means nothing to the energy world outside of the UK which will keep turning at full tilt. The Middle East, China and India as well as large swathes of the South Americas and the Far East are at work today. Coal is being dug, nuclear power stations are being fuelled and turbines are turning to keep the power demand on for the vast majority at work on planet Earth.

Including here, for as you sit infront of your screen, head to your pub for lunch or simply plug in your latest i-gadget you are relying on the engineers and maintainence people working right now in the control rooms of power stations and the national grid supplying you with the energy you need to enjoy your day of lounging about.

Energy never stops or takes a day off. If it did we'd all certainly notice and perhaps appreciate it a little more.

Have a great Xmas we'll be back with our news service on Friday.
