It’s for locals – cut-price energy for people near wind farm

Good Energy will be offering a first of its kind ‘local tariff’ to people who live near its Delabole wind farm in Cornwall – with plans to roll out the ‘blueprint’ tariff across Britain as it builds more farms.

Households which are within 2km of the wind farm will get a 20% discount on Good Energy’s standard electricity prices. The firm says it will save the area’s average customer around £100 a year on their electricity bills.

The tariff will also pay a ‘windfall’ bonus every year the turbines exceed their expected performance of around £50 per household.

The green energy supplier will be launching the new tariff from early 2013 and is welcoming local residents to check their postcode to see if they are eligible.

Juliet Davenport, founder and Chief Executive of Good Energy said: “When we did the consultation here at Delabole we got very strong feedback that people were interested in buying electricity from the site and whether they could get a discount so hopefully we’ve fulfilled that both for ourselves and for the local community.”

She added: “I’m proud that Good Energy is leading the UK wind industry with a new model ensuring that people who live near our wind farms share in their success.”
